Life and goodness

Peter Obi is a hard core Catholic, He never plays with anything concerning God. He is one of  the Catholic Knighthood Communion. Churches, hospitals, schools, motherless homes and charity institutions he built is hardly countable. He is also a very good lover of sports and enjoys promoting sports with vigour.

His love for education can never be under rated. During his entire stay in Office as the Governor of Anambra State the standard of education in both primary, secondary and tertiary level skyrocketed, as students of Anambra state won many education competitions in Nigeria and beyond. Obi pays over hundred student’s school fees every year from his personal money. Quite a good man. He personally also visits schools to address students and donated school buses to every secondary schools in the whole of Anambra state.

Widows and the less privileged never forget the love he showered on them during his stay in office. Throughout Anambra state, people clamour about his wonderful deeds and wish he would come back to continue these good things.

Business and Executive Career resume

Before Okwute entered politics, he has been a wealthy business man and one of the wealthiest in south east with estimated net worth of  over $10 Million (unconfirmed) with many investments. He was known as the youngest successful Chairman in the Fidelity Bank PLC and also held managerial posts and positions in many companies, associations and offices: Guardian Express Mortgage Bank PLC and Next International Nigeria Limited. He was the honorary special adviser to the president on finance (till 2015) during the time of President Goodluck Jonathan. He was also a member in the Presidential Economic Management Team. Furthermore, he was the vice chairman, Nigeria Governors Forum (2008-2014) and Chairman, southeast Governors Forum (2006-2014). Peter Obi was the Former Chairman, Next International (Nigeria) Ltd. In addition, he was the former Chairman, Board of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). And also, he was the former Chairman, Future Views Securities, Ltd and the Former Chairman, Paymaster Nigeria PLC. All these shows that he has an intimidating career resume.

Mr. Peter Obi stepped into Politics in 2003, he joined the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and contested for the governorship post against Dr. Chris Ngige in Anambra State. Obi lost the Election to Ngige due to election fraud as was declared by the election Tribunal some years later. He took the case to the Court where it lasted for three controversial years. Later on, Ngige was  replaced with Obi in march 2006, with Dame Virginia Etiaba his deputy. Etiaba later replaced Obi when he was impeached. Peter Obi continued fighting for Justice. In the 2007 general election, People’s Democratic Party placed Dr. Andy Uba as the Governor, Obi challenged his impeachment and the supreme court reinstated him in 2007 and was allowed to complete his tenure in 2010. He won a fresh election in 2010 and served the state till 2014. He handed over to Chief Willie Obiano. It was believed that he did a very good work more than any other governor in the history of Anambra State. Anambra was the first State to commence Sub-Sovereign Wealth savings, the first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa. For the first time in the history of the State, ambassadors and High Commissioners of notable countries such as United Stated, Britain, Russia, European Union, South Africa, Belgium, Israel, the Netherlands, Canada, among others, visited the State for investments.

Some of Peter Obi’s Achievements

During and after the stay of Peter Obi in office, development partners such as UNDP, UNICEF, the World Bank, DFID, the European Union etc., started working with the State. The Nigerian Debt Management Office (DMO) rated Anambra as the least indebted state in Nigeria. The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria rated Anambra State as the most financially stable state in the country. Peter ensured the hand over of Schools to the original owners (Churches) and the state moved from twenty fourth (24th) position out of thirty six States to number one in National Examination Council (NECO) and West African Examination Council (WAEC) examinations for three consecutive years. Through partnership with the Church in the Health sector, his Government funded the transformation of many hospitals and maternity to a standard level. His government distributed more than thirty thousand (30,000) computers to secondary schools, including twenty two thousand, five hundred (22,500) from HP, which attracted commendation to himself. More than seven thousand (700) buses were provided for secondary schools in the State by Peter Obi’s Government and boreholes were provided in schools all over the State. His government commenced the planned development of the Igbariam Campus of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, including the fencing, construction of internal roads, electrification, construction of the Faculty of Law, Auditorium, Administrative Block, Faculty of Agriculture, Management Building, among others. During his tenure and with his government’s support, Anambra State became an oil producing State.

All these and many more secured his success as the best Governor of Anambra state so far.

Peter Obi Honours and Awards

By now, Obi would have built a museum for keeping his awards. In 2014, He was given the Nigerian Library Association Golden Merit Award for remarkable improvement of libraries in Anambra State, such as, his construction of the Kenneth Dike Digital State Library, remarkable upgrade of the Onitsha Divisional Library, and provision of library facilities in secondary schools across the State. Obi secured the Champion Newspaper Most Outstanding Igbo Man of the Decade. In 2014, He received The Voice Newspaper (Holand) Achievers Award for Outstanding Example in Leadership and Governance. He received also The Golden Jubilee Award from Catholic Diocese of Onitsha for outstanding contribution to quality health care delivery in St. Charles Borromeo Hospital in particular and Anambra State in general, on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee celebration of the hospital in 2013. Still, he won the Silver Bird Man of the Year in 2013. And in 2012, he won the Business Hallmark Newspaper Man of the Year. He also won The Golden Award on Prudence, by the Methodist Church of Nigeria as the Most Financially Prudent Governor in Nigeria. Also in 2012, He received the Leadership and Good Governance Award by The Ezeife Leadership Foundation for restoring peace and harmony to Anambra State. In the same year, He won the Best Performing Governor on Immunization in South-East Nigeria, by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In 2009, he received the Champion Newspaper Nigeria’s Most Trustworthy Governor Award. Also, Thisday Newspaper gave him an Award of Most Prudent Governor in Nigeria. In 2007, The Sun Newspaper gave him an award of Man of the Year.

Honourably, Okwute was the first Governor in Nigeria to seek the interpretation of tenures of Governors when INEC allowed elections to take place in Anambra State when his tenure had not expired; the election already concluded was cancelled and he was allowed to complete his tenure. He was the first governor, whilst still in Office, to be appointed a Special Adviser to the President. He was the first serving Governor to be appointed into the Presidential Economic Management Team. He was among the first Governors to be honoured with a National Award in 2011, while still in office.

All these and more achievements made Obi one of the best Governors in Nigeria, and which I am sure made Atiku Abubakar chose him as running mate for the 2019 presidential election
