Eko Atlantic : New Mega City being built in Nigeria

By Gabriel Ezenwa (Rev)

Lagos is the commercial and economic nerve centre of Nigeria. From Lagos, at Victoria Island comes the reclamation of some part of Atlantic Ocean, a new Mega City that is springing up in Lagos Nigeria called “Eko Atlantic City”.  It is deemed as Africa’s 21st century city and will become the new commercial gateway of Africa with towering structures of architectural excellence offering a lifestyle incomparable to anything else in the African continent.

It began as an endeavour to protect the coastline of the city of Lagos from the rampaging waves and floods from the Atlantic Ocean into a Mega City that would become the new economic hub of Nigeria and Africa. The project started some time in 2006 during the reign of the then governor of Lagos state Bola Ahmed Tinubu and gained enormous progress during the time of Babatunde Raji Fashola. Hopefully Fashola’s successor Ambode, will support immensely the sole contractors and developers South Energyx Nigeria Ltd a subsidiary of the Chagoury group of company based in Lagos to make the dream of the Mega City a reality. When completed, Eko Atlantic will cover approximately ten million square meters of land (10,000,000 ). It will have state of the art urban design, clean water, sewage network, advanced telecommunications and spacious roads. So far, about five million square meters of land have been reclaimed from the sea. It will have ten distinctive districts which will showcase the finest design in urban development. In the centre of this city will rise the new financial heart of Lagos , the “Eko Atlantic Business District”. Eko Atlantic will be protected by a massive wall that can withstand the worst storms and weather conditions that may occur in the next thousand years. This wall is what they call the “Great Wall of Lagos”. The wall will protect both Eko Atlantic and Victoria Island. Watch the video below to see for yourself what the dream of this Mega City is like. ekooo
